Scripture:1 Peter 5:5-10
Reference Scripture : James 4:4-10
Observation: “God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble”. One of the things God warns us against repeatedly is pride. Pride puts “self”above man and above God; it is all about me. God hates pride because of what it does ( Prov 16:18) “Pride goes before destruction”. Pride takes God out of the center and puts self there. When someone is proud they are not really acknowledging God and may be trusting in things other than God. Remember the devil was full of pride, putting himself above God and ending up being destroyed out of God’s favor with his agents. This also is one of the reasons God warns us against pride. When we look at James 4:4-10, we see that living to please the world is working against God’s will. The devil is in the world and so is his temptation, “the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, the pride of life”(1 John 2:16). So if you are living for the world you are putting yourself high above God and man and that acts outside of the commandment of love. How can you love others when you can’t even see them, how can you love God when you don’t even acknowledge him. Therefore in James 4:4-10, God shows us how to humble ourselves before God and man.
Don’t be in the world
Acknowledge God in everything
Repent of sins
Say no to the devil
Foster good intentions
Put others before self and see the need of others to help meet them (1 Peter 5:5)
Then we see what God shows us that humility does for us. In 1 Peter 5:6-10; God Shows us that humility before God and man.
The fruit of humility requires patience
Trust in God
It helps you to surrender to God and find help against the enemy to resist him.
Application to Life: I can see that there is room for humility in my life. I sometimes go at it on my own way or how it works for me. Currently I am learning to surrender it to God before, after and during. I need to acknowledge God more in my living with things. I am also learning to see others, their needs, before mine.
Prayer: Dear God, empower me to live a life of humility by your holy spirit. Amen.
